what is critical thinking?

To me critical thinking is being open minded on everything you do or hear about it especially if you don’t know if true fact or just an opinion. I have heard this term before in my high school English class, my philosophy 194 and math 193. An "experts" definition of critical thinking is, "Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.http://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/defining-critical-thinking/766. This source identifies a particular process that one must engage in to thinking critically by mentioning generated by, observation, experience, reflection, and reasoning. I think that the connection between IM 204 and critical thinking is we will be dealing a lot of research about other people and you have to use critical thinking.

  1. Very true, Abdi...human populations are complex. A group's perspective on the world and their condition is colored by their own point of view, shaped by religion, culture, media, laws, etc...then when someone else studies that group, the researcher's observations could be affected by their own values, media, laws, etc.. Our mission is to ask a lot of questions in order to make sure that our research results are not biased.
