Original Research

I have done research paper before and it was when I was in high school. Me and my group when to Rochester downtown and act like we don’t speak English and trying get to someone help us with direction of Hospital and see how many people we ask that help us and didn’t help us. The different between library research and original research is library research you can’t experience and find the answer and you can find the answer you looking for by researcher that research your question. Some pros for Original Research is that you can experience in real life and some cons are you might night find the right people to ask the question. Some pros for Library research is the information is easy to access and some cons are some researcher have not done research on the question that you really want to know.

  1. Hi Abdi,

That is a clever experiment that you did, to find out how many people would help a group of people who did not speak English to get to where they wanted to go. When you did that experiment, did you have to fill out any forms with the high school so that they were aware of the research study in case you or your classmates got in trouble?

At the university level, anyone who does original research like that has to fill out paperwork with the Institutional Review Board and Human Subjects Review Board, so that the researcher(s) can prove that their study is ethical in order to be protected by the university and supported in case something goes wrong.

There is a psychology professor who has her students do studies of people on campus, where they have to watch how people would respond to certain situations (simulated theft, for example). One group of students did a computer theft study in the library; prior to that everyone had to be informed of the study and the participants so that we did not intervene. Public Safety was also informed, so that the researchers simulating the theft did not get into trouble. Some of the interactions between students engaged in the study, and unknowing participants, that took place in the library related to the mock theft got ugly, however, and so we had to support the researchers to make sure they did not get hurt.

Something to think about...definitely a big challenge in doing original research!

    Sincerely,
    Professor Wexelbaum
